Natural Blue Dye – Indigoidine

Dyes are widely used in various industries. However, most industrial dyes are synthetic, and studies have shown health problems caused by synthetic dyes. Consumers tend to be more interested in products that do not include artificial coloring agents. Take the food industry as an example. Several large food companies, including Kraft, Nestle and Hershey, announced their plans to replace artificial colorants with natural pigments in their products. Viablife established an efficient method for the production and purification of indigoidine, a promising natural blue dye. This blue pigment is biosynthesized from two molecules of glutamine and has shown antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. It represents a new natural blue dye that can find wide applications in the textile, cosmetics, food, drink, art, pharmaceutical and paper industries.

Biohalogenation Technology

Halogenated compounds represent about 20% of pharmaceuticals (such as vancomycin) on the market and a quarter of those in the development pipeline. However, preparation of halogenated molecules relies on chemical methods. Chemical halogenation typically requires harsh reaction conditions including high temperatures and toxic reagents (such as chlorine gas, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen peroxide). This is often accompanied by poor selectivity, which results in unspecific halogenation and undesired byproducts, creating difficulties in the downstream purification process. Hangzhou Biopak Co Ltd. developed a novel biohalogenation technology that allows green and efficient preparation of halogenated molecules for drug discovery. This technology uses halogenases to specifically introduce chlorine or bromine to target compounds (macrolides, tetracyclines, quinolines, isoquinolines, polyphenols, etc.) to yield corresponding halogenated derivatives. This enzymatic approach is highly specific, efficient, and environment-friendly. Viablife offers the following services to research institutes as well as pharmaceutical and chemical companies.

  1. Biohalogenation Kit. This is the first and only biohalogenation kit on the market. It provides researchers with quick access to specific preparation of halogenated compounds in the lab. Reaction setup is pretty straightforward. The kit includes all necessary components and no special equipment or reagents are needed.
  2. Halogenated molecules. The company sells various halogenated molecules such as derivatives of macrolactone, quinoline and isoquinoline.
  3. Biohalogenation service. Customers can request special biohalogenation services. For example, Viablife can develop particular biocatalysis approach for the customers to solve problems in chemical synthesis of target compounds. In addition, upon request, Viablife can also produce the requested compounds for the customers. The goal of Viablife is to provide economical and green solutions to chemical synthesis problems.
