Paraquat dichloride, commonly referred to as “paraquat,” is one of the most widely used herbicides

Paraquat is used to control weeds in many agricultural and non-agricultural use sites. It is also used as a defoliant on crops, like cotton, prior to harvest.

Paraquat is highly toxic to humans. One small sip can be fatal and there is no antidote. due to the fact that it is highly poisonous, the form that is marketed normally has a blue dye to keep it from being confused with beverages such as coffee, a sharp odor to serve as a warning, and an added agent to cause vomiting if someone drinks it. However the nature color of Paraquat is colorless and clear liquid.

Paraquat is classified as T+ very toxic under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. such a product had been sold in over a hundred countries for more than forty years, the use and misuse of Paraquat has led to thousands of deaths and many more nonfatal poisonings; acute and chronic health consequences such as respiratory and kidney damage, skin ailments, eye injuries, nail loss, dizziness and other adverse effects have been reported all over the world, Paraquat actually had phased out for Chinese Domestic market, but still allowed for export market.

During photosynthesis, superoxide is generated, which damages cell membranes and cytoplasm.

Mode of action
Non-selective contact herbicide, absorbed by the foliage, with some translocation in the xylem.

Uses
Broad-spectrum control of broad-leaved weeds and grasses in fruit orchards (including citrus), plantation crops (bananas, coffee, cocoa palms, coconut palms, oil palms, rubber, etc.), vines, olives, tea, alfalfa, onions, leeks, sugar beet, asparagus, ornamental trees and shrubs, in forestry, etc. Also used for general weed control on non-crop land; as a defoliant for cotton and hops; for destruction of potato haulms; as a desiccant for pineapples, sugar cane, soya beans, and sunflowers; for strawberry runner control; in pasture renovation; and for control of aquatic weeds. For control of annual weeds, applied at 0.4-1.0 kg/ha.
